President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama hosted the Sixth Annual State Dinner on Wednesday, honoring British Prime Minister David Cameron. The black-tie event was attended by U.S. and foreign government dignitaries, Hollywood celebrities, and major donors.


Sec. of State Hillary Clinton Hosts 2012 International Women of Courage Awards Ceremony. She is joined by First Lady Michelle Obama in honoring 10 women around the world who have fought for the rights of women and girls and advocated for their empowerment.

At a time when women’s rights across the globe are being challenged as never before, including in the U.S., ten women who fought for the rights of women and girls around the world were recognized this week for their courage and achievements.

First lady Michelle Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton presented the 2012 International Women of Courage Award to ten women who in the face of almost impossible odds have advocated for women’s rights and given women and girls around the world a new sense of empowerment.

First Lady Obama said the women were honored because of their commitment to fighting for the world as they know it should be: “They saw corruption, and they worked to expose it. They saw oppression, and they worked to end it. They saw violence, poverty, discrimination, and inequality–and they decided to use their voices, and risk their lives, to do something about it.”

Honorees included :

Maryam Durani, Afghanistan; Pricilla de Oliveira Azevedo, Brazil; Zin Mar Aung,Burma; Jineth Bedoya Lima,Colombia; Hana Elhebshi, Libya; Aneesa Ahmed; Maldives, Shad Begum, Pakistan; Samar Badawi, Saudi Arabia; Hawa Abdallah Mohammed Salih, Sudan; and Safak Pavey, Turkey.
